About Bradenton, Florida

Bradenton is a city in Manatee County, Florida, United States, and home to approximately 57,000 residents.  It lies on the south bank of the Manatee River near its mouth at Tampa Bay, about 10 miles (15 km) north of Sarasota. The explorer Hernando de Soto landed nearby at Shaw’s Point, in 1539 (an event commemorated by a national memorial, and by the Hernando DeSoto Historical Society). Founded in the 1840s, the city was named for an early settler, Joseph Braden, who planted sugar and built a “castle” there in 1854, remnants of which survive. The community developed as a winter resort and shipping centre for farm produce (citrus and winter vegetables) and was incorporated in 1903. In 1947 it merged with Manatee (founded 1842), its neighbor to the east, to form the city of Bradenton.

In 1911 Henry Plant built a railroad line into Bradenton which opened up commerce within the area and led to additional growth; by 1914 there were nearly 1,000 people living in Bradenton.-The city experienced its greatest boom between 1920 and 1929 when phosphate mining began to fill many jobs once held by citrus farmers after they had been wiped out by freezes.-In 1947 Standard Oil discovered oil off coast of Sarasota leading to major expansions in both tourism and population as well as greater affluence among residents; this newfound wealth helped support construction of many new buildings including art museums and theaters which remain important cultural attractions for visitors today.
